The Mama Shelter Los Angeles Hollywood is a small, stylishly designed city hotel in a great spot, between Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard. There are very few Accor hotels in the United States, and this was one of the very few in Los Angeles. It was affordable, which is why I booked it. For two or three days in Los Angeles, it worked very well.

Please note: this hotel has closed. It stopped taking bookings in early 2025. As far as I know, there is no Mama Shelter left in the United States, and a new one is due to open in Mexico City at the end of 2026. This review is here as a record of my stay.

Quick verdict: A nice little city hotel with a super location one block from the Walk of Fame, a lovely roof terrace with a lounge and a great view, and friendly staff. The room is small and plain, the bathroom is tight, and there is no real desk. JCI Score 2.9 out of 5.

Location

The hotel is perfectly placed, right between Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard, one block from the stars on the Walk of Fame and everything that goes with them. One evening there was even a film shoot in the street right in front of the hotel.

Still, Los Angeles stays Los Angeles: nothing is close to anything else. Even from a great address you always have to travel far.

Getting There & First Impression

I arrived after a long flight, and the arrival was chaotic. I had returned my rental car at the airport and took an Uber from the airport to the hotel. The ride was long and expensive, but that is normal in Los Angeles, because the distances are simply huge.

From the outside, the hotel is a white corner building with a sign on the roof. It is small and stylish. I would call it a designer city hotel.

Check-In & Loyalty Experience

Check-in was easy and without problems. I was Platinum, but I did not get a big upgrade. My room looked like all the others.

I did get a welcome drink, and I had it on the roof terrace. That was really nice.

The Room

The room was small and plain, with a dark ceiling, a wooden board along the wall with a TV on it, and a bed with a wooden headboard. The bed was a king-size bed, but not a huge one, just a normal-sized king. It was okay and very American, but I did not sleep really well.

  • The bathroom and the shower were okay, but narrow and small. The shower was a bit better than the bathroom.
  • Cleanliness was okay.
  • There was no real workplace. There was a shelf with a stool next to it, which is not much to work at.

Food & Drink

The roof terrace is the best part of the hotel. It is a chill-out lounge with big cushioned seating areas, colourful umbrellas, a bar and a super view over the city. I had my welcome drink up there. Beyond that, I did not eat at the hotel, so I have nothing to report on the restaurant or breakfast.

Digital Customer Experience

Nothing digital to report.

The Bill & Value

I paid about €171 per night for three nights. For Los Angeles, that was affordable, even cheap, and that was the main reason I picked this hotel.

Verdict

What I particularly liked

The super location between Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard, the roof terrace with the lounge and the view, the welcome drink up there, the friendly staff and the affordable price.

What I didn't like

The small and tight bathroom, the plain room, the lack of a real workplace, and the long and expensive Uber ride from the airport.

Would I come back? Yes, if it were still open. It was a nice city hotel, and for two or three days in Los Angeles it was very good.
