Work

What I look at: How well can I work in this room? I write this blog on the road, I have meetings, and I produce content. Fast, free WiFi is standard today, so it only costs points when it is missing or bad.

I don’t want to sit on the bed with my laptop all the time. I often do, because there is no other way. But when I want to work in peace, a desk I can sit at comfortably is what matters, with enough space, good light and sockets within reach.

Some hotels offer more: meeting rooms or business services that really help. They count here too.

How I score it

  • 5: a big desk, a good chair, good light, plenty of sockets, and perhaps useful business services. I can work here for a full day.
  • 3: I can answer emails, but not work comfortably for long.
  • 1 or below: no desk, or no usable workspace.

This criterion matters mostly for business travellers. If you only sleep in your room, you can give it less weight.
