The façade of the old villa in a quiet side street, two blocks from Checkpoint Charlie. It has been beautifully renovated, and I liked it right away. 3.4

Mercure Hotel & Residenz Berlin Checkpoint Charlie

Berlin
The old town of Tallinn with its church towers and a cruise ship in the port, seen from the sea as I arrived by ferry from Helsinki. The hotel is about a 20 minute walk from the terminal. 4.4

Swissôtel Tallinn

Tallinn
The entrance with the big SLS letters and a silver duck sculpture in the garden. The hotel is a polished glass tower right on the sea, nice to look at but a big house. 3.2

The view from my suite at dusk: the whole city lit up over the Han River. This view is the best thing about the room. 3.9

Teddy bears like these stand all over the resort, some of them two metres tall, here next to the sign to the pool. In a nearly empty hotel they can be a little eerie. 3.4

The Costanero at dusk, when the glass facade finally shows its warm side. By day, the hotel looks rather cool and sober. 4.6

The Pullman at night: a classical building with the glowing sign and fairy lights along the cornice, and a modern upper section lit in purple and red. The architects clearly had fun with the two buildings. 3.6

Mercure Grand Hotel Biedermeier Wien

The view from the top floor over the rooftops of Vienna, with St. Stephen's Cathedral on the right. The bar up here, Das Loft, is dreamy. 4.4
