Cleanliness
What I look at: Is the room fresh and spotless, or does it feel worn and musty? I look at the bathroom, the floors, the bed linen and the surfaces. And I notice the smell: how fresh is the room overall?
Hair is my biggest no-go. I can’t stand hair in the bathroom or on the bed linen. In the shower, in the washbasin, on the towels, on the sheets. On white bed linen, dark hair is easy to see, and I see it in so many hotels. I understand that it can happen, but it is like a hair in the soup in a restaurant: even the best restaurant looks bad when the cook leaves a hair in the soup. My advice to every hotel: check your quality by looking for hair.
How I score it
- 5: spotless and fresh. No hair anywhere, nothing to complain about.
- 3: clean, but musty or worn. Nothing dirty, but I would not call it fresh.
- 1: visibly dirty.
Cleanliness is about the state of the room, not its age. An older hotel can still score a 5 if it is kept perfectly.
