The SLS Cancun is a big, polished glass tower right on the sea, and it was a good start for our Yucatán trip. We had a large corner room with a balcony facing the water, I slept very well, and the pool was great. The hotel zone around it feels sterile, and the style is nice but nothing special.

Quick verdict: A large corner room with a sea view, a great pool, an easy check-in and a good night's sleep. On the other side: a sterile hotel zone, a big and rather impersonal building, friendliness that was just okay and a style that is nice but not outstanding. JCI Score 3.2 out of 5.

Location

I landed in Cancún and took an Uber to the hotel. It took about 20 minutes. The ride goes through the city centre first, then into the hotel zone.

The hotel zone feels sterile. As a European, you are not used to this: it is a district of its own, closed off, with only hotels in it. It is not a place for an evening stroll through a lively neighbourhood.

Getting There & First Impression

The SLS is a polished glass tower right on the sea. At the entrance you see the big SLS letters and a silver duck sculpture in the garden. It looks nice, but it is a big house, and it feels a bit sterile too.

Check-In & Loyalty Experience

Check-in was easy, with no problems. We got a welcome drink voucher and swapped it later for a very tasty margarita. I was Platinum at the time, and that voucher was all I got. For the status, that was disappointing.

The Room

We had a room on the corner, and it was really beautiful. It was quite large. A big shelf worked as a room divider, with a seating area in front of it, and behind it stood a huge bed. From the balcony we looked straight out at the sea. That was excellent.

It was hot outside, but sleeping was very pleasant. Maybe the jet lag helped, but I really slept well.

The shower was okay. I would give it four stars.

There were enough power sockets. As a European you need an adapter, though. My adapter cube kept falling out of the North American sockets, which is a bit annoying. So bring a proper one.

The WiFi was okay. We could work well at the desk, and everything was fine there.

Food & Drink

I don't remember if we had breakfast here, so I leave it out. The welcome drink was a margarita, and it was very good.

Digital Customer Experience

Nothing digital to report.

The Bill & Value

Two nights cost €330.73 (about $354), which is about €165 per night. I earned 1,596 Reward points and 907 Status points. As a base for our Yucatán trip, it worked well. You can check current rates and availability on the official Accor page for the SLS Cancun.

Verdict

What I particularly liked

The large corner room with the balcony and sea view, the very good sleep, the pool with enough loungers, the tasty welcome margarita, the easy check-in, and the good starting point for our Yucatán trip.

What I didn't like

The sterile hotel zone, the big and rather impersonal house, friendliness that was only okay, no real recognition of my Platinum status, and a style that is nice but not outstanding.

Would I come back? For a beach stay I would choose a smaller, more personal place directly on the beach. On the rest of our tour we liked those better. As a starting point for the Yucatán trip, the SLS was a good choice. There are not many Accor hotels in the area, so that helped too.

Things to do near SLS Cancun

  • Isla Mujeres

    by ferry

We took the ferry across, and it does not cost much. The island has the dream beaches you picture when you think of Cancún and Yucatán. We spent a week there, it is a beautiful place, and I can really recommend it.

  • The sea:

There is a lot you can do on the water around here.
