- WalkabilityBeach area, local food market across the street
- Airport / TrainGrab from Changi Airport, bus on the way back
The Grand Mercure Roxy sits almost exactly between Changi Airport and the city centre. I picked it for one reason: the Executive Lounge. It's an older hotel, but with Platinum status it paid off.
Quick verdict: A dated, slightly musty building with a huge upgraded room, a great bay view, a nice pool and a very good lounge. Fair value, but there are nicer Accor hotels in Singapore. JCI Score 2.9 out of 5.
Location
The hotel lies midway between the airport and the city centre. From Changi I took a Grab. On the way back I took the bus, which works very well.
When I was there, a metro line was being built right in front of the hotel. A station may be open by now, so check before you go.
The surroundings are not a classic tourist area. But the beach is close, and across the street there's a local food market.
Getting There & First Impression
The building is old. It's a big, boxy block, and you can see its age. The lobby is generous, though, and the welcome was very friendly.
Check-In & Loyalty Experience
I had Platinum status at the time, and it paid off. I was upgraded to the second-highest floor. The hotel has two Executive Floors, and that's where you land with an upgrade. A very nice move.
The top floor has an Executive Lounge, and it was the reason I chose this hotel. You can work there, and there are drinks. Downstairs, a bar near the pool runs a happy hour for status guests. That was a real highlight.
The Room
My room was huge. Really big, with a wide window front and a view over the bay of Singapore. The hotel doesn't sit right on the beach, but on this high floor you look over everything else.
It's quiet up there. I stayed on the 11th or 12th floor, so street noise wasn't an issue. The air conditioning did keep me awake a bit, though.
There was plenty of space for my suitcase and for working on the laptop. The interior is dated, you notice that. Heavy, thick carpets and dark colours make the whole place feel a bit musty. It was clean and tidy, but it isn't a cosy or comfortable place to be, apart from the pool.
The bathroom and the shower were fine. Nothing special, nothing to complain about.
Food & Drink
I didn't book breakfast, so I can't tell you how it is. The pool area is really nice, and there's a pool bar. The Executive Lounge is the better reason to come here, if your status gets you in.
Digital Customer Experience
Nothing digital to report.
The Bill & Value
Three nights, €463.06 (about $493) in total. That's about €154 (about $164) a night. I earned 1,700 Reward points and 966 Status points. For a huge upgraded room with lounge access, that's okay. You can check current rates and availability on the official Accor page for the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy.
Verdict
What I particularly liked
The upgrade to an Executive Floor, the huge room with its bay view, the Executive Lounge, the happy hour for status guests, the pool area and the local food market.
What I didn't like
The dated, dark and slightly musty interior with its heavy carpets, the air conditioning that kept me awake, and the construction site in front of the hotel.
Would I come back? Only if I need to be close to the airport. I know now that Accor has nicer hotels in Singapore. Without that need, I'd pick one of those instead.
