The twin beds with a red tulip headboard, a nod to Amsterdam. The room was clean but very simple, and I would not call it comfortable.

The same small double room with its two single beds and burgundy cushions. I slept okay here, but there is no real style anywhere, even if the name says Styles.

The desk with kettle, water bottles, safe and mirror. It is hardly a workspace, and I could not work in this room at all.

My window looked onto a brick courtyard full of parked bicycles. The room sits in the basement, behind a very narrow staircase that is no fun with a suitcase.

The bathroom is cramped, with just a washbasin, a glass shelf and a mirror, but it was clean and does the job.

The shower is tucked into the beige tiled corner with a hand shower and grab bar. Cramped as it is, the water flow was good, which I liked.

The ibis Styles Amsterdam City is a cheap bed in a good location. You reach the inner city on foot in a few minutes, the room was clean, and the water flow in the shower was good. The rest is very basic: a room in the basement at the end of a very narrow staircase, a functional welcome, no workspace and no style at all.

Quick verdict: A clean, very simple budget hotel within walking distance of the inner city. The room is in the basement, the staircase is very narrow, the bathroom is cramped, and the welcome was rather unfriendly. You pay for the location, not for the hotel. JCI Score 1.6 out of 5.

Location

I came from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport by train to Amsterdam Central Station. From there I took the tram, which took about 10 to 15 minutes to the hotel.

The hotel is close to the inner city. On foot you are in the centre in 5 to 10 minutes, and that is the best thing about it. Right next door there is another ibis Styles, I think the ibis Styles Amsterdam Amstel, so make sure you book the right one.

Getting There & First Impression

From the outside and inside it is a simple budget hotel, nothing more. Nothing here is meant to impress. The "Styles" in the name is almost cheeky: neither this hotel nor its neighbour is stylish in any way. It was really very simple.

Check-In & Loyalty Experience

The welcome was so-so. The staff were rather functional and, to be honest, not very friendly.

The rate was cheap, so I did not expect more.

The Room

My room was in the basement. To get there you go down some steps and along a very narrow staircase, which is not fun with a suitcase.

It was a small double room with two single beds. It was clean, but very simple. I would not call it comfortable, and it had no real style. I could not work in it at all, so there is nothing to say about a desk.

I slept okay.

The bathroom was cramped, but the water flow in the shower was good.

I did not have breakfast here. I think the hotel does not offer breakfast at all.

For a clean room within walking distance of the inner city, that is a cheap rate for Amsterdam, and it is the only reason to pick this hotel. Verdict

What I particularly liked

The cheap rate, the clean room, the good water flow in the shower and the location, only 5 to 10 minutes on foot from the inner city.

What I didn't like

The room in the basement behind a very narrow staircase, the cramped bathroom, the functional and rather unfriendly welcome, the missing workspace and the lack of any style.

Would I come back? No. There are better places to stay in Amsterdam.
