The Mercure Hotel Wiesbaden City is a big, solid city hotel between the main station and the market square, and I have stayed here many times. It is clean, it has a huge lobby, a very good breakfast and a digital room key in the Accor app. It is also a bit aged, and stylish it is not. I come back anyway.

Quick verdict: A reliable, clean and well-located business hotel with a quiet room at the back, a very good breakfast, a good lobby bar and a digital key. The hotel shows its age, the bath-shower combination in my room was a hurdle, and rates during congresses can be far too high. JCI Score 3.0 out of 5.

Location

The hotel is roughly halfway between the main station and the market square, which makes it a very good base. From the main station it is a walk of about 5 to 10 minutes, or you take the bus for two or three stops.

If you come by car, there is a big driveway in front of the hotel and a large underground car park. I came by train, so I cannot tell you what parking costs, please ask the hotel.

Getting There & First Impression

The lobby is huge. I like it, and as a regular guest I always find my way around quickly. The hotel itself is large, and you can see that it has been renovated in different stages: some parts look fresh, others clearly show their age.

Check-In & Loyalty Experience

The welcome is friendly, but not over-friendly. In such a large hotel you sometimes have to wait a few minutes at the desk, which is normal.

What I find really good is the digital key. You can open your room door and use the lift with the Accor app on your phone. I have not seen this at any other Accor hotel so far, so this one is ahead of the pack.

As a Platinum member I got a small gift in the room, a little screw-top jar with jelly beans. It is a small gesture, but a nice one.

The Room

On my last stay I had room 309, a nice and relatively generous room facing the courtyard at the back. It was very quiet, so quiet that I could sleep with the window open. The room was spotless, really perfectly clean.

The coffee selection in the room is large, which I appreciated. The desk is small, but it is good enough to get some work done.

The bathroom was the weak spot in my room. There was a very big bathtub that doubles as the shower, and you had to step into it. I had this room type on one or two stays, but not every room has a bathtub, and I have stayed in other room types here too. I did not find the shower very good, and for many guests the high edge is a real hindrance. The bathroom also looks mixed, as the hotel was renovated in different stages.

I have stayed here often and tried many room categories, and the quiet rooms at the back are the ones I would go for.

Food & Drink

The breakfast is very good, with an excellent selection. The service is okay, and the seating is nice. Once I had unpleasant neighbours at the next table, but that is not the hotel's fault.

I had my welcome drinks in the lobby bar. The white wine there is good, which is no surprise, as the wine region is close by.

Digital Customer Experience

The digital room key and lift access through the Accor app work well and are a real plus. So far I have not seen this at any other Accor hotel.

The Bill & Value

One night cost €76.10 (about $88). I earned 313 Reward points and 178 Status points. For a clean, well-located hotel with a good breakfast, that is a very good price. Be careful, though: during congresses and big events the rates can be very high, and then the value is not there at all. You can check current rates and availability on the official Accor page for the Mercure Hotel Wiesbaden City.

Verdict

What I particularly liked

The central location between the station and the market square, the spotless room, the quiet courtyard side where I could sleep with the window open, the excellent breakfast, the good white wine in the lobby bar, the digital room key and the big underground car park.

What I didn't like

The aged parts of the hotel, the bath-shower combination with a high step-in in my room, the small desk, the lack of style, and the very high rates during congresses.

Would I come back? Yes. I have been here often, and I will be back. I would love to see a newer Accor hotel in Wiesbaden to try as well.
